Registered Nurse (Patient Safety Officer)

Major duties of the VISN 22 Registered Nurse, Patient Safety Officer include, but are not limited to:
Provides clinical and administrative recommendations relative to the patient safety, risk management, and High Reliable Organization (HRO) functions and is a key leader in the Network's approach to assess and improve the quality of healthcare services; Designs, modifies, and implements systems compatible with professional standards and within the mission and the goals of the organization to improve the cost-effective use of resources; Establishes and maintains effective relationships with all levels of medical center personnel across eight facilities in VISN 22 and relate effectively with customers, families, and the community as well as program and service leaders at the network levels; Develops, manages and facilitates the Network Patient Safety/Risk Management Program, providing oversight and guidance of patient safety, risk management, High Reliable Organization, and other activities including reports to the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS), National Quality, Safety, Value Program Office and Risk Management Program Office; Provides leadership and acts as Network liaison for VISN programs related to Patient Safety, Risk Management, and High Reliable Organization; Acts as liaison and promotes integration of Network programs including System Redesign, High Reliable Organization, Credentialing and Privileging, Environment of Care, Safety and Engineering, and Veteran satisfaction to further the goals of patient safety, Just Culture, and HRO; Develops staff for career progression; Forecasts new knowledge needs for changing practice environments/population groups. Plans, implements, and evaluates strategies to meet those needs. Utilizes the nursing process and a wide range of analytical and evaluative methods and techniques in providing consultation to leadership of all VISN 22 facilities and provides support to program leaders, medical center committees and quality improvement teams; Utilizes current trends and relevant theories in an analytical framework to design/modify, implement, and measure integrated programs and activities to achieve clinical and administrative goals of the network; Contributes to and fosters improved organizational performance related to the management to information and current standards of patient safety/nursing practice/clinical guidelines; and Consistently communicates and treats customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Experience:
Two or more years of experience in Patient Safety, Risk Management or Quality Management Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 3-4 years of nursing practice/experience. Reference:
VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements:
This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and be able to shift priorities. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. In the performance of duties, the incumbent may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicles.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
